The Story
The 1970 Pontiac Trans Am Ram Air IV presented an unparalleled blend of aesthetic prowess and raw power. Powered by a 400 cubic inch 6.6L V8 engine. Its radical 'Ram Air IV' setup, one of the high-performance engine options. The car's aggressive, aerodynamic shape, replete with front and rear spoilers conveyed an unmistakable message of power.
This incredibly rare one of 59 example has been masterfully restored to a like-new condition throughout, including excellent lifetime documentation and PHS Certification.
Specially ordered by Pontiac Motor Division dated July 24th, 1970 on the manifest, built in Norwood, Ohio and was used as a promotional vehicle to showcase Pontiacs most impressive muscle car to date. It was moved around the country and eventually put up for sale at Scotti Pontiac in Rochester, New York
Over the next 20 years, this example changed ownership a few additional times and was re-painted white - which the 4th owner felt was a travesty for such a special vehicle. Only 88 Ram Air IV examples were built in 1970 and of the 50 4 speed examples, only 6 were painted in Lucerne Blue with only three believed to still be in existence today.
In October of 2001, The 4th owner commissioned a year long rotisserie restoration to be performed by C.A.R.S. of Pittsburgh, PA - who’s work ensured this classic was returned to factory perfection. Minor rust was repaired properly with steel, and everything else on the vehicle is either new, rebuilt, or refurbished.
During the restoration, the factory motor was rebuilt and balanced with Super Duty rods. PSH Documentation shows the RAIV engine, 614 heads, 4bbl RAIV carburetor, distributor, transmission, and the complete drivetrain as 100% numbers matching, including the 3.73 PT 12 bolt rear end.
The present condition of this 1970 Trans Am Ram Air IV can only be described as “Museum Quality”- with exceptionally finished paint, glass, trim, and chrome work. Factory wheels and an immaculate undercarriage make the car all the more impressive.
Notably, Pontiac Motor Division had ordered the car to be build without the factory rear sway bar, presumably to put the tire smoking abilities of this rare RAIV on display for automotive journalist. This car also did not come from the factory with a front console, which it's restoration reflects.
Today, the 1970 Trans Am Ram Air IV stands as a testament to a glorious era of automotive design and engineering, where the thrill of driving was championed over all else. It remains one of the most iconic symbols of American muscle.
George Pehanick’s Take:
"This is one of the rarest, most coveted, and most valuable cars in my collection. One of 59 produced. Again, a Pontiac ‘factory ordered’ car that was evidently campaigned by Pontiac to show off the new body style 70 Trans Am RAIV 4 speed. The last numbers matching 4-speed that I’m aware of traded hands at $330k. I believe it was RK Motors in Charlotte. Generally speaking, these pedigreed, numbers matching 70 RAIV Trans Am’s trade hands very quietly and privately. This car is a highly documented concours level restored car. I’ve never campaigned it. I had a collector representing one of the big auction houses attempt to throw some shade on the car and say it was ‘re-bodied’. I found out later their true intention was trying to buy it from me on the cheap. The only way to disprove such a claim is to expose the inner cowl matching number. At significant time and expense, we did just that. Pulled the hood, passenger side fender and all heater apparatus to expose the inner cowl matching numbers. I have pictures to prove it. This is a very cool, super rare Pontiac. This is the Holy Grail of early Trans Ams with only 59 4 speeds made, perhaps 10-12 perhaps less still exist today?"
